Two lawnmowers

We did the work, we sowed the seeds, and now we're living in nothing but weeds.
We built our house on stilts and sand,
We're sinking fast and leaning down.
We built the first level and made a home, it was polished and neat and not so cold.
The holes appeared, we patched them up.
The wind blew threw and froze us stiff.
We used duct tape and band aids, putty and nails.
But the stilts moved around and the wind kept blowing.
Our repairs fell apart time after time.
We patched and we patched until our arms were sore, our eyes were swollen, our throats were raw, and our hearts were weak.
We decided to buy insurance.
The insurance made us feel safe and comfortable.
There were some very cold nights still.
And the holes kept needing patching.
We decided to build a second floor, that we needed a second level.
We talked about the plans but couldn't agree on a blueprint.
The stilts couldn't hold a second floor.
We didn't believe it, we thought we could do anything together.
But we knew in our hearts there would never be a second floor.
The stilts were starting to buckle and we were still praying for a second floor.
So we got more expensive insurance.
It was gold diamond level.
We looked at the second floor blueprints again.
We didn't agree on the staircase,
One thought there should only be one.
The other thought there should be at least three.
So we drew and redrew six sets, all worse than the last.
There was an earthquake,
and then another.
Our stilts splintered and the first floor caved.
We looked at our house,
It was hopeless.
Even the expensive insurance wouldn't pay us enough to start building a whole new house.
And we can't agree on a second floor.
We don't want another level with a dangerous foundation like that.

We decided to walk away and let the weeds take over.
Soon our house would disappear and we'd make two walkways out of our lot.
We got two lawnmowers to get through the weeds.
Now there's a clear path in each direction.
